Hungry? Open that bag of charcoal

This is sad stuff of course, but what's with the picture? The article is about food stamp recipients starving because of rising food costs, but the most prominent item in the picture is a bag of charcoal? I think there may be more wise investments for food stamps if you're worried about starvation...

Read the article here.

When I was a grocery clerk I would see people use their food stamps to buy all kinds of ridiculous stuff, like candy and other junk food, oh and beer. Maybe there's a correlation between poverty and poor money management.

it could be that they couldn't make payments on utilities and have to rely on an outdoor grill for cooking. or maybe they want to live like people with more money do. actually I had to take a multicultural education class and we talked about the different value systems across varying socioeconomic status groups. one study showed what each group would do if they suddenly received some unexpected money. the lowest group would spend it, usually on gifts and fun things they could share with their friends. the middle group would save it and the upper group I can't remember... maybe invest it or buy something they wanted. probably cocaine. jk anyway, who knows. I'm sure my actions seem ridiculous to other people too. like when I bought a piano the other day and I don't even know how to play one
